Downers Grove man jumps into Chicago River, police investigating as suicide
DOWNERS GROVE – A 19-year-old Downers Grove man died early Saturday morning after jumping into the Chicago River with bricks fastened around his waist, said Chicago Police Officer John Mirabelli.
The incident occurred about 5 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of West North Avenue in Chicago.
A witness who spoke to police said he saw the man threatening to jump into the river at 4:40 a.m. The witness spoke with the victim, attempting to prevent him from jumping, before alerting police who were on patrol in the area.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found that the man had jumped from the bridge. Members of the police marine unit and Chicago Fire Department recovered the body and took the man to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m.
The incident is being investigated as a suicide.
