Downers Grove Library takes step forward in renovations

I am happy to report a major step forward in the Downers Grove Public Library’s response to community needs.

A talented Chicago firm, Product Architecture + Design, is hard at work on plans for interior renovation of the library building.

Since the move into its present expanded and renovated building at 1050 Curtiss St. in 1999, the library has received millions of visits and checked out many millions of items to readers, listeners and viewers.

The well-loved building is now looking a little tired. Walls, floors, furnishings and restrooms need a makeover. Space for computer users is scarce. Expectations for convenience and service have evolved. Students, community groups and business people need places to meet, work and collaborate.

The design process has a public component.

At library board meetings May 22, June 26 and July 24, we will review the architects’ progress. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the June 26 meeting will feature schematic design, including any proposed changes to the floor plan or interior traffic pattern.

Although we do not yet know what exciting improvements our design professionals may envision, I am confident that we will achieve a refreshed building to serve Downers Grove well for many years.

I hope you will come to see, hear and speak on June 26.

Rick Ashton is executive director of the Downers Grove Public Library.
