In Downers Grove baseball battle, South tops error-plagued North
Errors the Trojans' downfall as Mustangs win 7-3
DOWNERS GROVE — With a little bit of help from Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South's baseball team emerged victorious Thursday.
The normally sure-handed Trojans committed eight errors that led to four unearned runs in a 7-3 Mustang win at North's Legion Field.
Both teams still lead their respective divisions. South (21-3) is tops in the West Suburban Gold at 14-1 and North (16-4) leads the West Suburban Silver at 11-1. The Mustangs host Willowbrook in a WSG doubleheader at 4 p.m. Saturday while the Trojans play two at defending state champ Oak Park-River Forest.
South starting pitcher Zach Taylor yielded just three hits and an earned run in six innings of work. The game was called due to lightning and fading daylight with North coming to bat in the bottom of the seventh. North's Matt Bohanon was saddled with the loss, but didn't have much help from his defense.
Taylor helped his own cause in a big way, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Zach Burdi, Danny Mayer, Alex Galik and Matt Zinnecker each had a run and an RBI.
Emil Baftirovski tripled with one out in the third and came home moments later on Connor Kopach's sacrifice fly to cut the Mustangs' lead to 3-1. South led 7-1 in the sixth when Jack Goergen's two-out single scored Joe Provenzano (hit by pitch) and James Sheldon (reached on an error) to make it 7-3.
A half-hour lighting delay stalled the game until nearly 7 p.m. before the game was called.
