Hilltoppers, Raiders feature improved players on the diamond

Rising stars emerge for area high school baseball, softball teams

Many high school players are debuting in the spotlight this spring for area baseball and softball teams – from seniors stepping into leadership roles to underclassmen earning starting varsity jobs.

Will Anderson

School: Glenbard South baseball

Class: Senior

Position: Pitcher

Impact: A part of a strong pitching staff, the senior has been a valuable reliever for the Raiders. Appearing in six games thus far, Anderson has notched a win and three saves, compiling an ERA of 2.15 in 13 innings of work while striking out 11.

Ashton Cattenhead

School: Glenbard South softball

Class: Junior

Position: Outfielder

Impact: Hit hard by graduation, the defending Class 3A state champions needed new faces to step up, and Cattenhead has done that in a big way. The outfielder is hitting .521 on the spring to go along with six doubles, two triples and 21 RBIs.

Will Cornwell

School: Glenbard South baseball

Class: Junior

Position: Catcher

Impact: The perfect example of a breakout player, this junior has gone from obscurity to one of the top hitters in the area. Along with handling the catching duties for the Raiders, Cornwell is batting .561 on the spring with 12 doubles, one home run and 28 RBIs.

Luke Domask

School: Glenbard West baseball

Class: Junior

Position: Center fielder

Impact: After moving up to the varsity at the end of last season, this junior has seen his role expand this spring. Hitting .383 on the year, Domask has two doubles and one triple to go along with 11 stolen bases. He also has been solid defensively, making just two errors.

Shelley Warmolts

School: Glenbard West softball

Class: Sophomore

Position: Outfielder/catcher

Impact: A first-year varsity player, Warmolts has worked her way into the clean-up spot in the batting order. The sophomore is batting .406 thus far, which includes a .500 average with runners in scoring position. She also has contributed four doubles, four stolen bases, six RBIs and 11 runs scored.
