Best of Berwyn 8th graders share the spotlight

BERWYN – Some of the best and brightest young people in Berwyn got just what they deserved May 1– a banquet held in their honor.

A total of 25 eighth graders from Berwyn schools were honored at the 12th annual Best of Berwyn Junior Citizen Recognition Program, held at Skylight Banquets.

Each year, the North Berwyn Park District recognizes the top eighth grade students in the community. The students are nominated by educators, community leaders and elected officials, then individually interviewed to determine who the top three students are.

Samantha Torres from Heritage Middle School was awarded the top honor as Best of Berwyn, Raul Galvan from Heritage Middle School received second place honors and Julio Garcia from  Freedom Middle School  was awarded third place.

More than 300 guests attended the banquet.

“These students are an example of the future leaders that reside in the city of Berwyn, and the city is very proud of all the candidates recognized in the North Berwyn Park District’s Best of Berwyn program,” stated Berwyn Mayor Robert J. Lovero.

Organized in 2001, the Best of Berwyn program has recognized about 350 outstanding students over the years.The Best of Berwyn program is funded by the North Berwyn Park District, which has expended approximately $200,000 over an 11-year period to run the recognition event.

The 2013 Best of Berwyn candidates include: Isabella Andries, Raquel Armas, Jazlynda Benes, Gianna Cairo, Elizabeth Corral, Francis Espedido, Raul Galvan, Julio Garcia, Samuel Garcia, Vanessa Garza, Alyssa Hayes, Gabrielle Irizarry, Amanda Martinez, Wincy Faith Mejias, Wincy Phine Mejias, Krystal Millan, Isabelle Ndoumy, Olivia Paplaczyk, Julissa Rodriguez, Natasha Rodriguez, Karla Salcedo, Danielle Snyder, Samantha Torres, Juan Antonio Valdez, Maximilian Woywod.
