Berwyn Bikes and Bungalows event set for May 4

Published: Thursday, May 2, 2013 11:55 a.m. CDT

BERWYN – The second annual Berwyn Bikes and Bungalows bike ride event will be held beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Cigars and Stripes, 6715 W. Ogden Ave.

The ride highlights several of Berwyn’s kit and Chicago-style bungalow homes. Sponsored by the City of Homes Organization and the Berwyn Active Transportation Committee, the event also educates the community about new bike lanes and paths.

The family-friendly event coincides with Bungalow Appreciation Week, and begins and ends at Cigars and Stripes on historic Route 66. There will be two separate rides. The first is a leisurely 6-mile ride with intermittent stops to discuss the rich history of several bungalows as well as the Berwyn Active Transportation Plan, which aims to improve the city’s walking and biking environment.

The second is a 25-mile self-guided tour of the Chicago area bungalow belt, stretching from Berwyn to Portage Park on Chicago’s northwest side. A post-tour celebration, including food and entertainment, will conclude the event.

Registration is $5, or at the supporter level $15, which includes a tax-deductible donation to the City of Homes organization. Children under 18 ride for free, but must register for the event.

Participants can register online at www.cityofhomes.org. Or, you can call the Berwyn Development Corporation to register at 708-788-8100; ask for Kurtis. Space is limited.

The Berwyn Bikes and Bungalows bike ride event is being held in support of Justin Carver, a bicyclist injured in Berwyn this past December.
