District 181 celebrates Crossing Guard Appreciation Day

Published: Wednesday, May 1, 2013 5:00 p.m. CST

HINSDALE – Community Consolidated School District 181 will officially recognize its crossing guards May 7, proclaimed as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Illinois.

Each District 181 elementary school will specially thank the guards through handmade cards from students, tokens of appreciation from staff and parent-teacher organizations and well wishes from local families.

District 181 relies on 21 guards to manage traffic and help ensure student safety at the seven elementary schools located in Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale.

Crossing Guard Appreciation Day has been observed in Illinois since 2005 when Hinsdale resident Maryann Romanelli lobbied the governor to declare a day in their honor. Romanelli, a safety advocate and parent of two District 181 graduates, also brought Walk to School Day to District 181 in 2000.
