York plays to scoreless draw with St. Charles North

Goalkeeper Lansdowne, Dukes hold off North Stars attack

ELMHURST — If you can't score, at least play defense.

York struggled to create much offensively against last year's Class 3A runner up, St. Charles North, on Tuesday in Elmhurst but was also able to keep the North Stars off the board in a scoreless draw.

"We knew they were tough," said York senior defender Angela Guerino. "I think we had the mindset at the end that we may not have been able to score, but we were sure not going to let them.”

Guerino, along with a stout performance from senior goalkeeper AnnaBell Lansdowne, keyed the Dukes shutout. Rachel Ogdon, Lizzy Akre, Edith Flores and Jaime Kovatchis also contributed on defense.

"Everyone has been in that game where you don’t have the run of the game, but at the same time you stay competitive and you don’t lose," said York coach Chris Halupka. "I thought AnnaBell had a great game in goal and once again that’s leadership of four years of varsity experience in the back.”

Lansdowne finished with 11 saves to keep the shutout against the North Stars (14-2-1).

York (10-3-2) played without leading goal scorer Alyssa Kovatchis, out with a knee injury, and senior Ellie Ordonez left in the second half with a knee injury as well.
