ELMHURST – Police are reminding local parents about safety tips after a man allegedly approached two girls in downtown Elmhurst last week and offered them a ride.

About 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the two girls, ages 13 and 14, were walking along North Addison Avenue and West Second Street when a white man, about 30 to 35 years old, allegedly approached them. He is described as having short brown hair, being slightly overweight and wearing a gray T-shirt.

Police believe his vehicle is an older model gray sedan with several thick horizontal black stripes on both of the driver's side doors.

The girls saw the man again about 7:55 p.m. that night in the 200 block of Cottage Hill Avenue. He did not speak to them, but did wave, police said.

Police are reminding parents to tell their children to walk to and from school in groups of two or more, never talk with strangers and to avoid unknown vehicles. Tell police, school staff and parents about any suspicious incidents, and call 911 in emergencies.
