Pace Bus expands Bolingbrook service

BOLINGBROOK – Pace officially announced the expansion of its Bus on Shoulders service, effective Monday, May 6, at a press conference Tuesday in Bolingbrook.

The 755 and 855 routes will include additional trips during morning and evening rush hours, as well as a new midday service, Pace announced. There will also be an evening trip on Route 755 that will serve some Metra Heritage Corridor stations on an on-demand basis.

In November 2011, Pace introduced the Bus on Shoulders program – a southwest suburban commute featuring Chicago-bound express buses that use the shoulder of the Stevenson in order to avoid heavy traffic.

Ridership has grown significantly on both the 755 and 855 routes, which serves Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Romeoville and Burr Ridge before heading downtown, according to a release.

Service changes for Route 755 include a doubling of the number of rush hour trips from two to four in each direction. A new, midday round trip has been added based on passenger requests.

A late evening departure has also been added to shuttle passengers to the Pace Old Chicago Park-n-Ride in Bolingbrook and then make stops upon request at the Metra Heritage Corridor stations in Lemont, Lockport and at Joliet Union Station.

Existing reverse commute trips traveling outbound during the morning rush and inbound during the evening rush will be eliminated due to low ridership.

The changes for Route 855 include three new morning rush hour departures (for a total of ten), two new evening rush hour trips (for a total of nine), a new midday round trip, and a later evening trip. A new alternating stop alignment on some outbound departure is expected to reduce travel times.
