Addison residents to receive grant assistance

ADDISON – A new $2,000 grant from the National Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help provide a wide variety of assistance to Addison residents in need, including education and job counseling, rental assistance and temporary housing.

The money is part of SVdP's Friends of the Poor grant program, and will be disbursed by the Society’s conference at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

The program is serving more people in need than ever, according to a news release. The group's goal is to initiate systemic change – breaking the cycle of poverty, not just emergency or crisis assistance.

This year, SVdP will distribute $80,000 in grants through the program around the country. Grant applications are reviewed and awarded on a regional basis. Funding comes from the general public and the Society’s 141,000 members in the U.S., and is targeted to specific needs in each community that are above and beyond those available to the organization's chapters.

One of the largest charitable organizations in the world, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international nonprofit, Catholic lay organization of more than 770,000 men and women who voluntarily join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in 149 countries on five continents.

With the U.S. headquarters in St. Louis, Mo., membership in the U.S. totals more than 141,000 in 4,300 communities. Programs include home visits; housing assistance; disaster relief; job training and placement; food pantries, dining halls, clothing, transportation and utility assistance; care for the ill, the incarcerated and the elderly; and prescription medicine.

Last year, SVdP provided more than $660 million in tangible and in-kind services and made more than 1.5 million personal visits to homes, hospitals and prisons, according to the release.
