LYONS – Police and the people who they protect with their lives on a daily basis will gather at 11 a.m. May 10 for the 12th annual Cook County Police Memorial Ceremony at the Cermak Woods Forest Preserve, 7601 W. Ogden Ave., Lyons.

The event is held annually to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

This year's ceremony especially honors wife, mother and Cook County Sheriff's Correctional Officer Nikkii Bostic-Jones, who died June 18, 2012., when she was struck by a speeding hit-and-run driver as she walked across the street to go to work.

Former Riverside Deputy Police Chief Robert Gordon understands all too well what it's like when a family member in uniform leaves home in the morning and never comes back.

Chicago Police Officer Michael Gordon, his son, was killed Aug. 8, 2004, when the squad car he and his partner were riding in was struck by a vehicle driven by a drunk driver. Officer Gordon also served on the Riverside police force prior to joining the Chicago PD.

For the families of the fallen, it is always hard to believe, Gordon said.

A silent police motorcade will precede the start of the ceremony.

The site of the ceremony has significance as well.

Through the efforts of the Peace Officers Memorial Foundation of Cook County and the Cook County Forest Preserve, a portion of the property at the site has been dedicated to building a permanent memorial dedicated to those law enforcement officers that have been killed in the line of duty or killed while in the performance of duty.

The foundation is now raising funds to complete this memorial project estimated to cost $2.5 million.
