Good Samaritan Hospital, government officials promote 'Exercise is Medicine Month'

Published: Monday, April 29, 2013 6:11 p.m. CDT

DOWNERS GROVE – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully proclaimed May as Exercise is Medicine Month, and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is also reminding the community that a big part of being healthy involves regular exercise.

The hospital encourages members of the community to take part in developing a fitness program for themselves. The Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, located on the campus of Good Samaritan Hospital, is offering several activities to celebrate the new proclamation.

“I think this is the best thing Governor Quinn has done," said Dr. Jeffrey Oken, medical director of the Wellness Center. "It’s fantastic to raise awareness for people to bring exercise into their lives and learn how valuable exercise can be and how it can contribute to their short and long-term health."

The Wellness Center will also offer activities for members including a weight loss challenge, a group exercise class challenge and a workout that goes beyond the walls of the wellness center.
