Fired-up Lions show signs of turnaround

ELMHURST — Following Thursday’s loss to York, Lyons Township softball coach Dawn Schabacker was fired up.

Schabacker was hoping that could rub off on her team after a pair of disappointing performances, a 7-1 loss to Glenbard West on April 24 and the 6-4 loss at York.

The early returns were positive.

LT went 4-1 at a tournament at St. Charles East on Friday and Saturday to get back to its early season winning ways. After a 4-0 start, the Lions had lost five of nine heading into the tournament.

“We were playing with no fire under us,” Schabacker said. “We were going through the motions. We were not ready to play, and this is conference and you have to be ready to play.”

LT fell behind early in both games and were not able to recover. Against York, the Lions scored three in the seventh and had the bases loaded to score more, but the Dukes got out of the jam to end the game. Kayla Morrissey, Alexus Pelletiere and Leah Nunez each had two hits in the loss.

The back-to-back conference losses dig the Lions in an early hole in the West Suburban Silver. The positive weekend at St. Charles could be a sign of a turnaround.

“I thought we’d be able to pick it up and get on a roll quicker,” Schabacker said. “I’m hoping we’re going to kick it into gear because we’re capable.”

On Friday, LT beat St. Ignatius 3-0 and lost to the host Saints 11-2. Katie Dzierwa pitched six scoreless innings in the win over the Wolfpack, but the Lions managed just five hits in the loss to St. Charles East.

Saturday’s three wins were heavily aided by pitching. Ashley Koziol pitched a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Hoffman Estates. Dzierwa followed that with complete games in wins over Maine South (3-1) and Harlem (4-1).

LT returned to conference play Monday against Oak Park-River Forest, and their next Silver game is against the Dukes on Friday in Western Springs.
