DOWNERS GROVE — Strong pitching, solid defense and situational hitting is what has carried Downers Grove North's baseball team all season.
The same formula lifted the Trojans to an 8-0 win over visiting Glenbard West Saturday morning.
North starting pitcher Mike O'Malley surrendered just four hits (one of which came with two outs in the Hilltoppers' half of the seventh inning), the Trojans played error-free baseball, and they scored four of their runs with two outs and they improved to 14-3 overall and 10-1 in the West Suburban Silver.
North's five-run rally in the second broke a scoreless tie. Troy Southard (walk) and James Sheldon (hit by pitch) led off the inning. Southard scored on a two-base throwing error on Jack Goergen's bunt as Sheldon went to third. David Henson's single scored Sheldon, Connor Kopach's single brought home Goergen and Henson, and Raymond Greco doubled home Kopach. Kopach's and Greco's RBIs came with two outs.
Joe Provenzano walked ahead of Southard's single to start North's half of the fifth, and Sheldon's double brought both home. Matt Zabloudil's two-out double plated Sheldon.
Only twice West (6-12 overall, 4-7 WSS) put its leadoff batter on base and never had multiple runners on base. Spencer Refer laced a pair of singles and Dan Simoneit and Mitch Monocchio had singles for the Hilltoppers.
North won the first game of the series 8-1 Friday. West host the series finale at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
