ELMHURST — Taylor Pankau is developing a habit of making big defensive plays late in games.

With Lyons Township rallying in the seventh inning Pankau made a diving stop to preserve York’s 6-4 win on Thursday at Bryan Middle School.

The Lions entered the inning down five and had the bases loaded when Katie Dzierwa drilled a ball that Pankau had to dive to stop and throw to first to get the final out.

“That was a huge play at the end of the game and she did that last night for us, too,” said York coach Drew McGuire. “A diving catch at the end of the game to finish it. I moved her from the left side of the field over to second this year and she’s done nothing, but make plays for us.”

York (7-8, 3-0 West Suburban Silver) scored twice in the first inning and led the entire game. Leadoff hitter Angela Scalzitti sparked the Dukes by reaching base all four plate appearances and stealing four bases.

Freshman Abby Solem was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Senior Gracie Sullivan also had two hits.

Sullivan and Scalzitti both threw out LT runners at home plate from the outfield.

“Both of their arms from the outfield are tremendous and they always keep us in the game,” McGuire said.

York starter Elena Schwarz pitched 6.2 innings, but was unable to get the complete game after a 13-pitch at-bat from Ashley Koziol that resulted in a walk forced her exit during the LT rally.

Kayla Morrissey, Alexus Pelletiere and Leah Nunez each had two hits for the Lions (8-5, 1-2)

For LT, the loss was the second in a row after falling to Glenbard West 7-1 on Wednesday.

“We were playing with no fire under us,” said LT coach Dawn Schabacker. “We were going through the motions. We were not ready to play and this is conference and you have to be ready to play.”
