The Rolewicz family of Brookfield has been named the first Family of the Year award winners in the North District Area of the Illinois Elks Association, according to the Cicero-Berwyn Elks Lodge 1510.

The new award category was added to the North District agenda to honor families for their dedication and exemplification of the cardinal principles of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, including charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity.

Robert Rolewicz, who currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors, has been a member of the Elks for 37 years. He started up a Food Baskets for Needy Families Program in 1979 and is still chairman of the program today.

Rolewicz has been responsible for numerous Elks Lodge initiatives over the last four decades, including Coats for Kids, Bike Rodeo, veterans programs and more. He has previously been awarded the honor of Elk of the Year for a record-setting five times. He has served as the local Elks Lodge president for an unprecedented four terms.

Vicki Rolewicz, a registered nurse at Hines Veterans Hospital, was noted for her care of hospitalized vets.

Their children, Heather and Jeremy, have volunteered for and served in numerous charitable programs. Heather currently holds the position of lodge president. She is the youngest president in the lodge's 88-year history.

Jeremy, who is currently a student of engineering at the University of Illinois, regularly comes home to volunteer on Elk's projects.

The award presentation was made by North District Vice-President Mike Hostetler at a meeting held at the Waukegan Lodge April 14.
