WHEATON — After an extremely successful stint at Marist High School, Bob St. Leger came to Wheaton North with visions of building up the boys volleyball program.
So far, the results have been promising.
Securing a couple of come-from-behind wins last week, including a rare victory over Wheaton Warrenville South, the Falcons took a record of 14-6 into this week.
"I am really pleased with where we are at right now," St. Leger said. "We've had some nice wins and we are kind of reaching that point where we are learning how to win some of those games where we didn't play well early in the match.
"I'm not sure if we would have won those matches earlier in the season."
The highlight of the spring thus far was the 22-25, 25-11, 25-19 win over the defending state champion Tigers on April 23. Zach Sinn tallied 18 kills and Hank Bowen had 26 assists.
"I know it's been over 15 years," the coach said, when asked the last time the Falcons knocked off Wheaton Warrenville South. "Anytime you beat a program like that, it's exciting. And with them in our district, we know it's not just another game. Anytime you play Wheaton Warrenville South, there is going to be something added to it."
A day later, Wheaton North was just five points away from losing in two games to Glenbard North before recovering to post a 19-25, 25-22, 25-18 win behind 14 kills from Sinn.
"The kids play hard and they play together and we have a lot of talent on the floor," the coach said. "They have really bought in to what we are trying to do this year. They are working very hard in practice and they are paying attention to detail."
Playing their third match in three days, the squad lost 25-19, 25-23 to DVC leader Naperville North Thursday to fall to 5-3 in league play.
After taking the weekend off, the Falcons were set to take on West Chicago Tuesday followed by a home match-up with Glenbard East Thursday.
"You don't want to be playing at your peak right now," St. Leger added. "We just want to get better each day.
"I don't know if we've had a match where everyone is clicking at the same time but that is to be expected. You hope to get that at the end. We've got guys at the net with powerful arms. The one area we have to improve the most is defensively, when we play good defense, we play very well."
