LOMBARD — Glenbard East boys volleyball has had an up and down season, but on Tuesday things were very up.
The Rams thumped West Aurora 25-15, 25-14 to improve to 14-8 overall and 4-2 in the DuPage Valley Conference.
Star hitter Joey Farrell had a 10-point run with his powerful jump serve and finished with five aces for the match.
“It’s a great feeling," Farrell said of his serving run. "It gets the whole team pumped. We were making jokes out there. It gets everybody smiling. We always play better when we’re happy.”
The Rams cruised despite missing Zach Greene, the team's second leading hitter. Greene has been out for a couple weeks with a sprained ankle, but is hopeful to return by the playoffs.
“With Zach out I think guys are starting to figure out their roles and are doing a nice job of filling in for him," said East coach Marci Maier. "Tonight obviously Joe got going on his jump serve as well as everybody seemed to be in a good flow offensively and defensively on our side of the net.”
Seth Quam has taken on a bigger role with Greene out. He had five kills on Tuesday and was the team's second leading hitter at Downers Grove South's Mustang Invitational over the weekend.
Quam and the Rams head into Wednesday's match against defending state champion Wheaton Warrenville South looking to get a rare win against the Tigers.
“We have a little thing, if we beat them the coaches will take us out to dinner because we haven’t beat them in a few years," Farrell said.
