North High School ranked higher of the two, placing 36th of 667 public high schools in the state. South High School ranked 52nd.

Comparing the two, North had a higher score in college readiness, and students scored higher in math and reading on state exams.

According to the rankings, 38 percent of students at North High School take Advanced Placement classes. About 75 percent of the school’s students are proficient in reading, and 79 percent are proficient in math.

To rank the schools, US News & World Report teamed with Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research, a behavioral and social science research organizations, to analyze test scores.

The ranking methodology first looked to determined whether students were performing better than expected for the average student in the state, according to the magazine. The methodology also factored in the percentage of economically disadvantaged and minority students who were performing better than statistical expectations. The final step looked at the schools’ college-readiness performance using AP or International Baccalaureate test data.

The magazine awarded 19 gold medals to schools in Illinois, 50 silver medal schools and 69 bronze medals schools. Both North and South high schools were awarded silver medals.

Other high-performing schools in the western suburbs included Hinsdale Central High School, which ranked eighth in the state. St. Charles North High School ranked 21st, York Community High School in Elmhurst ranked 29th, Wheaton Warrenville South High School ranked 32nd, and Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn ranked 34th, among others.
