Mustangs belt 30 hits in doubleheader sweep
DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH — What was supposed to be a week full of games turned into another week of canceled contests for Downers Grove South’s softball team.
When the Mustangs got back on the field Saturday after a three-day break from action, they made up for lost time with a 30-hit attack in a 17-6, 11-3 doubleheader sweep of Wheaton Warrenville South.
“I wish we could bottle that up,” coach Ron Havelka said. “We really came out and hit well against them.”
Zahryha McFarland and Melissa Orton led the hit brigade Saturday as the Mustangs improved to 8-4 overall. McFarland went 5-for-8 on day with a double, two home runs and nine RBIs, seven in the first game. Orton finished the day 4-for-8 with two doubles, a homer and six RBIs.
“Zahryha’s been hot. She’s been incredible,” Havelka said. “She’s hitting well with people on base and her two home runs were just rockets right out of the park. Even her outs she was hitting rockets.”
The hitting was contagious and it spread beyond McFarland and Orton. Caitlyn Daly went 5-for-7 with three doubles and three RBIs, and Caroline Hedgcock and Dana Kremer also homered on the day.
Kelly Schmitt earned the pitching win in the first game and Hedgcock won the second game.
The WWS game continued the hit parade the Mustangs began on Tuesday, when they had 13 hits in an 11-1 win over Hinsdale South in the West Suburban Gold conference opener.
The onslaught started early with Daly blasting a two-out, two-run home run following Jessica Andree’s walk in the first. The Mustangs scored four runs on five hits in the second with Emma Thibault, Orton and Andree picking up the RBIs.
Hedgcock struck out eight, walked none and surrendered just three hits to the Hornets.
