Impressive wins extend Westmont baseball’s streak

WESTMONT — It took five days, but Greg Pietrzak finally finished what he started.

Pietrzak started on April 15 for Westmont’s baseball team, and on Saturday he finally finished it. The game was suspended because of rain on April 15, and when the Sentinels and Sandwich resumed the game Saturday, Pietrzak picked up the win as Westmont won 10-3.

“It’s not an easy situation for a pitcher to be in, but he did a great job,” Westmont coach D.J. Cocks said.

With Saturday’s win, the Sentinels had won seven straight and 10 of 11 as they improved to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Interstate Eight Conference. Westmont led 4-1 when the game was suspended, and Charlie Donovan had a two-run home run Saturday to help fuel the win.

Even with suspended games, canceled games, delays and rescheduled games, the Sentinels have been able maintain their winning ways.

“The guys are playing out of their minds,” Cocks said. “They really showed me something Tuesday against Sandwich. We were facing a Division I pitcher throwing in the low 90s, and we pitched well and played defense well and got the one run we needed to win, which is something we did not do last year. That was huge momentum going into Saturday’s finish.”

Zach Moran earned the complete game pitching victory in the 1-0 win with Donovan’s double plating Robert Kokoszka for the game’s only run.

Westmont was scheduled to play six games this week, including a home doubleheader Saturday against Chicago Noble Street Charter. Cocks was hoping the weather would cooperate and allow the Sentinels to get every game in.

“When you’ve won seven in a row and you’re clicking on all cylinders, you want to keep playing,” Cocks said. “Hopefully we can do that.”
