GLEN ELLYN — If there were any questions about the potential of the 2013 Glenbard South softball team, those were answered in a resounding way on Saturday.
Receiving stellar pitching from Jane Trzaska and Stephanie Chitkowski, the Raiders scratched across a pair of runs in the sixth inning to stun Downers Grove North and University of Illinois-Chicago-bound pitcher Elaine Heflin 2-1.
"The juniors that are playing on the varsity for the first time, they don't really know the logistics of DuPage County softball," said Glenbard South coach Julie Fonda. "We explained to them (on Friday) that she (Heflin) is the real deal. She is a phenomenal pitcher and Downers Grove North has a very good team."
After the Trojans plated one in the top of the sixth inning, Glenbard South answered right back. Payton Carli led off the frame with a single and after a sacrifice bunt, Hannah Taylor drove her in with a double. Taylor would later come around to score on a single by Ashton Cattenhead.
"We got some timely hits," the coach said. "Hannah had a great at-bat, on a full-count she hit the gap. I'm real proud of their approach at the plate. We played small ball and that worked for us. We put the ball in play. We only had five hits but against Heflin, I'll take that for sure."
Trzaska started inside the pitching circle for Glenbard South and allowed no hits in three innings. Chitkowski then came in and yielded three hits while striking out five the rest of the way. "Jane and Steph did a great job moving the ball around," Fonda said, "and our defense was phenomenal. We made the plays when we needed to."
The Raiders had last played on April 16 when they defeated Timothy Christian 6-0 behind a one-hit, complete-game performance from Chitkowski which included 13 strikeouts. Trzaska was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Taylor went 2-for-3.
"We are off to a good start (in the conference)," Fonda said. "The true test will be Elmwood Park on the 29th (of April). That is going to be a really good game. They are also undefeated in conference and just beat Riverside Brookfield."
