Residents of Wheaton's Briarcliffe subdivision may return to their homes

Engineering and public works personnel determined retention pond breach is now stable

WHEATON – This morning, members of Wheaton’s engineering and public works personnel assessed the Lake 4 retention pond breach north of the Briarclife subdivision and determined it to be stable.

Residents who evacuated their homes last night can return. The city will continue to regularly monitor the situation throughout the day and consult with experts as time progresses.

For any residents who have had utilities turned off: If their natural gass service was shut off, they are advised to call Nicor to check appliances and re-establish service. If electrical power was turned off due to flooding, a qualified electrician should be contacted to evaluate their system before restoring power.

The retention pond north of Brentwood Lane was found to be leaking, causing the potential for the berm to breach. Since homes in the immediate area could experience flooding in the event of a breach, city officials recommended residents be evacuated from the area bounded by Brentwood Lane to the north, Nottingham Lane to the west, Windsor Drive to the south and Cheshire Lane to the east.

Residents in the area were contacted by the city's reverse 911 system. This subdivision is several blocks northwest of Lambert and Butterfield roads.

Emergency personnel stabilized retention pond to the north of Brentwood Lane with sandbags late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Ongoing information will be posted to the city’s website at or will be available by calling the Wheaton Police Department at 630-260-2161.
