WESTERN SPRINGS – Western Springs Police will aggressively target distracted drivers from April 21-28 as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The department is urging motorists to put down their personal electronic devices and to focus on driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving at any given daylight moment across America. More than 3,300 people in the U.S. were killed in 2011 and 387,000 were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver.

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving such as texting, web browsing and reading or compiling emails. Texting while driving is not only unlawful but also most alarming as it combines three types of distractin – visual, manual and cognitive – taking your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel and your mind off the task of driving.
