BROOKFIELD – Helping Hand Thrift Shop, 3726 Grand Boulevard, reported it suffered extensive damage as a result of a late evening fire April 18.

The building sustained serious damage, according to a Helping Hand spokeswoman, but no one was injured in the fire.

Crews from the Brookfield Fire Department responded to the fire around 11 p.m. and were assisted by crews from neighborhing communities. Many local residents of the community called 911 to report the fire, and many more have reached out with their concern.

Employees said they were thankful of the hard work and fast response of the fire department, especially given the massive flooding the village experienced Thursday.

“As I watched firefighters and police respond quickly to the scene, I could not be more proud of our community”, said Mary Beth Hepp, executive director of Helping Hand Center in Countryside. “This will not stop us from continuing to serve our clients and fulfill our mission of assisting persons with developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence through quality programs and services.”

The shop is currently closed and will not be accepting any donations in the near future.

Proceeds from the thrift shop go to support the Helping Hand Center in Countryside. The Helping Hand Center provides programs and employment services to help people with developmental disabilities achieve their highest level of independence.
