Flood of 2013: Western suburbs recovering after tough storms

Residents are cleaning up throughout the western suburbs after record-breaking storms caused impassable roadways, school closings and flooded homes and businesses.

Some subdivisions and homes had to be evacuated, while several towns declared states of emergency on Thursday due to the heavy rain overnight. Many towns saw upwards of six inches of rain between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Numerous schools across DuPage, Cook and Will counties were closed Thursday, with several remaining closed Friday. For an updated list of school closures, click here.

The National Weather Service reports that the storm has moved east, bringing with it to those states a cold front, heavy downpours and possibly tornadoes.

Locally, showers may continue Friday afternoon, with accompanying wind gusts as high as 40 mph. The weekend welcomes the return of sunny skies, with a high temperature in the upper 40s on Saturday and upper 50s on Sunday.
