Building, tax season in Downers Grove Township
With the onset of spring and summer, the building season is upon us.
Whether building a new home, putting on an addition or remodeling, when you apply for a building permit the assessor’s office receives a copy of the permit.
We also receive copies of demolition permits. This lets us know changes are being made to the property and either some or all may change the assessed value of your property.
Each property owner who takes out a permit is sent a letter from the assessor’s office that explains the process of monitoring construction. This may include an interior inspection to note the number of baths, fireplaces, etc. as well as taking measurements of the new construction.
Our letter includes the names and photographs of our deputy assessor field personnel who will periodically stop at the building site along with an explanation as to the type of identification that each carries. We ask you to inform all family members and child guardians of this letter and photographs.
Please, before letting someone in your home, check their credentials. If you’re unsure, call the assessor’s office at 630-719-6630, or the police.
DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry will be mailing the 2012 tax bills on or about May 1.
Tax bills are normally paid in two equal installments on June 1 and Sept. 1. Please review your bill. Make sure you have the appropriate exemptions applied to your bill.
If you reside in your own home, you should receive the residential homestead exemption. If you are 65 or older, you should also receive the senior exemption and possibly the senior freeze for those having a total household income of $55,000 or less.
If you have completed new construction, you may receive the Home Improvement Exemption. It deducts the assessment attributable to the new improvement, up to $25,000, from the total assessment prior to tax bill calculation. This four-year exemption is automatically applied if eligible.
Other exemptions are listed on our website:
If you think there is a problem with your bill please call or contact the Downers Grove Township Assessor’s Office at 630-719-6630 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
