Weather postpones opening statements in Borizov trial

DARIEN — Jury selection was underway this week as Johnny Borizov of Willow Springs stands accused of orchestrating the slayings of Lori, Jeffrey and Michael Kramer of Darien in 2010.

Opening statements were expected Thursday, but postponed to next week as the DuPage County Courthouse was closed due to flooding.

Borizov is charged with convincing his friend, Jacob Nodarse, to murder the Darien family March 2, 2010. Borizov's girlfriend at the time, Angela Kramer, survived by hiding in a closet.

In the time preceding the murders, Borizov and Kramer were locked in a custody battle over their toddler son. Prosecutors allege Borizov turned to Nodarse to slay the Kramers to prevent them from testifying against Borizov in the proceedings.

Borizov's attorneys are expected to argue that prosecutors' evidence has unreliable statements made by Nodarse, who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to murder in September 2011.

Nodarse, of Countryside, faces 45 years to life in prison and will be sentenced after Borizov's trial.

Borizov is being tried on charges of murder, solicitation of murder and conspiracy. His trial could last up to four weeks.
