VILLA PARK — Willowbrook softball has gone from a surprise team last year to a respected team capable of making a run for a conference title.
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 start this season and ended a three-game losing streak by beating Addison Trail 4-0 to open play in the West Suburban Gold on Monday.
This is coming from a program that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2001 and hasn’t won a regional since 1993.
Coaches from Morton and Addison Trail have referred to Willowbrook as the team to beat in the Gold. Now that conference play is right around the corner, the Warriors will have the chance to prove that.
Following Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader at Hinsdale Central, Willowbrook starts a stretch of four conference games in a row. Monday at Morton and Wednesday against Leyden start the run followed by later road games against Hinsdale South and Proviso East.
Ace Darian Pelsor has anchored the pitching staff, allowing just five earned runs in 38.2 innings in the Warriors’ six wins.
Pelsor, Sam Schmidt and Alyssa Ressinger have made for a potent 3-4-5 in the batting order. Leadoff hitter Cheyenne Brunig has also been getting on base enough to give those batters run-producing chances.
