Part of North Main Street in Wheaton to close for flood control project

WHEATON – The city of Wheaton is scheduled to begin work on the North Main Street Flood Control Project in early May in order to reduce the frequency of flooding in that area during storms, according to a city news release. The project is expected to be completed in late October.

The project includes replacing the existing culvert pipes with a bridge, widening the channel and stabilizing the stream bank in order to reduce erosion. These changes will help convey stormwater downstream to Northside Park, the release reads.

During construction, North Main Street near the bridge will be open only to northbound traffic. Two detour routes will be in place for southbound traffic.

A local business route will be posted at Cole Avenue for those wishing to access local businesses or homes located within the project construction zone.

For drivers wishing to continue southbound past the construction area, a posted detour will route traffic west on Geneva Road, south on Gary Avenue, east on Harrison Avenue and back to Main Street.
