LOMBARD — Entering the season, Montini baseball was a team built around pitching, defense and speed.

Hitting has also entered the equation to propel the Broncos to a 10-1 start.

Montini is hitting .344 as a team with a deep lineup anchoring the offense’s success. The Broncos have scored double digits in five of their 11 games, including the 13-12 loss to De La Salle back on April 5.

“As a team we’re doing frankly much better than we thought we would,” said coach Bob Landi. “We’ve got some really good hitters two through six, but our lineup hits the ball one through nine.”

The offense has been the surprise, but the staples remain the same. Landi said the defense is as good as it’s been in recent years and the pitching has been as good as expected.

Ben Dobosenski hasn’t allowed a run in 16 innings, Chris Bartosz has a 2.50 ERA and junior Tyler Quick has a 1.80 ERA. Relievers Eric and Sean Frontzak have ERAs below one.

“There’s been a very strong start for our pitching staff,” Landi said.

As well as being the team’s top two starting pitchers, seniors Dobosenski and Bartosz are also the top two hitters. Dobosenski is hitting .448 in the three hole and Bartosz is rocking a .533 batting average right behind him in the clean up spot.

Montini is 7-0 in the Suburban Christian Conference and has a number of top Class 4A teams scheduled for later in the season. Highly ranked Lincoln-Way North and Lockport lie ahead. A game with 2012 state runner-up Lyons Township has been postponed twice, including on Wednesday.

The Broncos already matched up with some of these teams in the summer season when Montini made it to state.

“We were sixth in the state during the summer so we thought we had something special for the spring and it’s proved out that we have something special in the spring,” Landi said.
