Trojans top Mustangs, score first crosstown win in years

DOWNERS GROVE — Gianna Marconi had a plan, even if it didn’t look like she did.
The Downers Grove North junior found the ball at her feet midway through the second half of Saturday’s game with visiting Downers Grove South. From 23 yards out and near the left side of the penalty area, she turned and lofted a shot that tucked itself inside the top corner of the far post for the decisive goal in the Trojans’ 2-1 win over the Mustangs.
“I had an opportunity like that in the first half and didn’t convert, so I promised myself at halftime if I had the opportunity again I’d take it,” Marconi said. “I knew I wanted to go far post, I just didn’t know how high it was going to go.”
