DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Park District honored its volunteers at its annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception on April 10 at the Downers Grove Golf Club.

The Park District benefited from more than 6,575 volunteer hours in 2012 in the areas of Parks, Recreation, Museum, and Natural Areas.

Natural Resources and Interpretive Services Manager Shannon Forsythe recognized Joel Herning as the 2013 Natural Areas Volunteer of the Year.

Herning has dedicated more than 100 hours of service at Lyman Woods and Belmont Prairie during the past year.

Most notably, he spearheaded restoration efforts and invasive shrub and tree removals at Belmont Prairie this past fall and winter. Joel inspired many other volunteers to get involved at Belmont Prairie, including his son Jeff.

Julie Bunke, supervisor at the Downers Grove Park District Museum, honored Mary Ann Wolcott. Wolcott has been a volunteer with the Museum for more than five years.

She volunteers as a docent giving tours throughout the year at the museum and especially enjoys giving the tours to the second grade classes that visit the museum each spring. She also works with the Museum Collections Manager creating exhibits in the 1892 Blodgett House.

She teaches several classes offered through the museum including Victorian Valentines, Mother’s Day Tea, American Girl Doll Tea and Exploring the 19th Century Kitchen programs.
