LT softball beats Queen of Peace to highlight challenging week
WESTERN SPRINGS — Last week was supposed to be the week Lyons Township softball finally got a bunch of games in and got into a rhythm before conference play starts this Wednesday.
The Lions had six games scheduled and did get three games in, but that’s about all they could take.
“It was busy enough because it got really cold a couple of the days,” said LT coach Dawn Schabacker. “When we were at Queen of Peace it started out at 50 (degrees) and then it ended at a 32-wind chill.
“It was kind of a challenging week. With this weather everybody is just trying to get the games in when we can.”
The Lions won that game 5-1 on April 9, a day after losing 2-0 at Wheaton Warrenville South. Stefanie D’Anna, Leah Nunez, Ashley Koziol and Kayla Morrissey had multi-hit games and Katie Dzierwa threw a complete-game two-hitter in the win at Queen of Peace.
LT was scheduled to play Nazareth on Friday and even got close enough for the Roadrunners to show up to LT’s field, but further rain caused yet another cancellation. The two teams rescheduled the game for Tuesday.
The Lions got back to action on Saturday with a 3-2 win over Hinsdale South. Koziol struck out 12 and walked just one over the seven innings.
“That was a nice ‘W’ for us,” Schabacker said.
The next three scheduled games for LT are all West Suburban Silver conference games. The Lions will head to Bryan Middle School in Elmhurst to play York on Wednesday followed by games against Hinsdale Central on Friday and Proviso West on Monday.
“Hopefully we can start getting some games consistently so we can get on a roll,” Schabacker said. “It’s kind of hard when you go out to a game you’re ready to play and all of a sudden it’s a downpour and you can’t play. It’s just happening with everybody.”
