WESTERN SPRINGS — After losing two out of three to Downers Grove North in the opening West Suburban Silver series of the season, Lyons Township baseball got back on track against Proviso West.
The Lions swept away the Panthers in Saturday’s doubleheader, 10-0 and 9-0, and won 11-3 on Monday for their first conference series win. LT’s play on the field hasn’t yet matched its lofty preseason expectations, but the doubleheader sweep represented a return to normalcy.
“I was happy that our pitchers did not walk any batters and we only made one error so that was encouraging,” said LT coach George Ushela.
Max Larsen, Sam Cybulski and Mason Hunter each had two hits in Game 1. Alex Vannucci and Sam Heilenbach combined for the five-inning shutout.
Ace Keith Lehmann and Larsen combined for 13 strikeouts while allowing one hit each in the second game. Lehmann improved to 3-0 on the season and has 36 strikeouts in 24 innings. Matt Aikens starred at the plate with a 3-for-3 day.
The Lions entered this week with four scheduled non-conference games before heading into another conference series. This weekend, LT (7-4 entering Monday) plays Glenbard West. Saturday’s doubleheader is on the road and the Lions will host the finale on Monday.
The Hilltoppers have been playing better after a slow start. They took two from Hinsdale Central two weeks ago and split a doubleheader with York on Saturday.
“They’re always a pretty decent team,” Ushela said. “I just worry about how we play.”
