John Valle: Opportunties abound for York Township seniors

York Township provides a wide variety of programs, activities and services for senior citizens in order to help improve their quality of life.

Our Senior Center members enjoy many activities, such as weekly Bridge and Pinochle card games; woodcarving, yoga and art classes; beginner and advanced line dancing; a tai chi class; and Yuan Ji Chinese Dance.

In addition to our extensive Senior Nutrition program, services for our seniors include a barber, beautician, massage therapist, income tax preparation during tax season, twice-monthly free blood pressure checks, Internet access for seniors and more.

We also have many informational seminars, and we offer referral services including Legal Aid, Rules of the Road and Mature Driving classes. Almost every Tuesday, there is a free movie along with free popcorn.

Our Senior Center staff helps seniors with applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, "Circuit Breaker" prescription drug assistance and the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP).

We offer many one-day trips and in-house parties, and we publish the Senior Sun Newsletter 10 times a year to keep our members informed.

Our Senior Transportation Department provides rides for York Township residents who are at least 55 years old and registered with the township. Between 8:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. weekdays, township drivers transport registered seniors between their homes and any destination within York Township. Riders share the cost with the Township by purchasing coupons.

We have three basic categories of rides: 1) To and from Township Hall, 2) Essential rides consisting of doctor appointments, grocery shopping, etc. and 3) Non-essential rides including beauty shop, mall shopping, etc. Last year, we provided 12,333 rides. More than half of them were medical appointments.

Our fleet of vehicles consists of five late-model sedans and one bus, which accommodates eight passengers and two wheelchairs. Our transportation drivers provide our seniors with courteous, efficient, inexpensive and, most importantly, safe transportation.

For more information about programs, activities and services available to seniors through our facilities at York Township, call the Senior Center at 630-620-2424.

John Valle is supervisor for York Township.
