Prep roundup: Glenbard South splits final two games with Elmwood Park
Behind a 12-strikeout performance from Mike Atkinson, the Raiders beat Elmwood Park 6-1 in Metro Suburban Conference action Friday. The squad then dropped the finale of the three-game series by a 3-2 margin Saturday.
The Hilltoppers split a doubleheader with York Saturday, winning 2-1 while dropping a 3-0 decision.
Dennis Rudolph was the winning pitcher in the nightcap while Spencer Refer, Mitch Monocchio, Will Simoneit and Rudolph all produced doubles.
The Raiders beat Geneva 12-4 in a non-conference matchup Monday.
Glenbard South knocked out 12 hits and scored eight runs over the first three frames. That was more than enough support for winning pitcher Jane Trzaska.
Hannah Taylor, Danielle Scarpiniti and Trzaska all knocked out doubles to lead the offense.
The Hilltoppers defeated Leyden 25-10, 25-13 in a non-conference matchup Thursday.
The Raiders finished as the runner-up at the Oswego Tournament with 26 points. York (35) was the team champion.
The Hilltoppers came in fourth place at the Oswego Tournament Saturday with 14 points.
Competing in the 14-team Dave Donaldson Invitational Saturday at Wheaton Warrenville South, the Hilltoppers finished sixth with a score of 134.175.
Leading the way was Perry Zumbrook, who placed ninth in the all-around with a total of 46.975. He was sixth on the parallel bars and ninth on the rings.
Joey Mandarino added a third-place finish on the rings and Gene Herrera was seventh. Mario Sotelo was also seventh on the vault while Jon McNamara was seventh on the parallel bars.
Glenbard West also tallied a team score of 139.130 to take fourth place at the Ed Raymond Invite Friday at Conant High School.
Zumbrook was seventh in the all-around competition with a 47.50. He came in first on the vault with a 9.50 while also placing second on the rings (8.50), third on the floor exercise (9.05) and fourth on the parallel bars (8.85).
Dominick Sansone was third on the vault with a 9.11.
Mandarino added a fifth-place finish on the rings and Herrera again was seventh on that event.
The Raiders finished as the runner-up at Friday’s Lake Park Invite, posting a score of 125.950.
Eugene Boguslavsky captured the all-around title with a 48.150 while Paul Steger (41.600) placed third.
Boguslavsky also won the floor (9.20), pommel horse (7.70), parallel bars (8.20) and horizontal bar (7.30).
Steger was second on the rings (8.40) and parallel bars (7.80), fourth on the horizontal bar (5.90) and fifth on the vault (8.75).
Alex Nigl added a sixth-place showing on the pommel horse.
The Hilltoppers scored 81 points at the Bruce Ritter Invitational Friday (hosted by Downers Grove North) to finish in fourth place.
Madeline Perez won the 3,200-meter race with a time of 10:27.30 with Lisa Luczak coming in as the runner-up (11:00.77). Perez was also the runner-up in the 1,600, finishing behind Emma Fisher of York by .03. Luczak was seventh in that event.
Emma Reifel came in first in the 800 with a time of 2:19.07 while Emma Gambol was third in the 100 and third in the 300 hurdles. Mary Nevins also placed fifth in the 400.
The 4 x 800 relay was fourth and the 4 x 400 relay came in fifth.
In the field events, Gambol placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 9 inches.
