York soccer upsets Pepsi Showdown top seed

Kovatchis maintains hot scoring pace

ELMHURST — York girls soccer enjoyed a banner week with wins over Morton, Deerfield and Loyola.

The most impressive win in the streak came in the Pepsi Showdown second round against Loyola in Glenview. The Dukes (6-2-1) won 2-1 on Tuesday with goals from Angela Guerino and Alyssa Kovatchis to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal against Glenbrook South. The Ramblers were undefeated and the top seed in the tournament.

Thursday's winner moves on to the semifinals. The championship game is set for Sunday.

Ellie Ordonez scored twice and assisted another goal in the 3-1 win over Deerfield in the Pepsi Showdown opener on Saturday in Schaumburg. Kate Leonard scored the other goal and Kovatchis had an assist.

Kovatchis' hot scoring pace was on full display April 4 when she finished twice in a 4-1 victory against Morton. Kovatchis also had an assist and currently has nine goals on the season.. Bryce Banuelos had a goal and two assists and Kylie Bowman also scored.
