WHEATON – Emergency personnel from Wheaton responded to two fires Thursday morning.

A fire broke out in a science lab at Wheaton North High School. Thick black smoke was reported coming from the lab at about 7 a.m., according to information from the city of Wheaton. The fire was quickly extinguished by the school's sprinkler system, said Erica Loiacono, director of public relations for Community Unit School District 200.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire, a Wheaton police officer on the scene said.

Loiacono released this statement:

"This morning, before school began, there was a small fire in a science store room. The fire was put out by our sprinkler system and the Fire Department is on-site. When students arrived to school this morning, they were directed to the field house until the Fire Department could secure the area.

"The Fire Department has cleared the building for classes to resume. Classes located in the 800 and 900 wing have been relocated.

"Thankfully, there were no student or staff injuries and no one was transported to the hospital.

"We thank you for your patience as we wanted to make sure we had accurate information to communicate to our parents. We take the safety and security of our students very seriously. We will communicate more information as it becomes available throughout the day."

Wheaton firefighters also responded to a house fire at about 7:10 a.m. a few blocks away at Gary and Armbrust avenues. The city released this information:

"The unoccupied single-family residence was well involved in fire upon arrival of the fire personnel. The fire was brought under control within 60 minutes. The fire did not cause any injuries.

"At this time, the cause of both fires is undetermined, and they are both being investigated by the Wheaton Fire Department, Wheaton Police Department and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Taskforce. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time. The Wheaton Fire Department was assisted on the scenes by the Wheaton Police Department, DuPage County Sherriff and numerous area fire Departments."
