Seeds of Greatness

Published: Sunday, April 21, 2013 2:47 p.m. CDT

Greetings from the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the largest full-time advocate for business and economic growth in our region, including Countryside, Indian Head Park, Hodgkins, La Grange, La Grange Park, McCook, Western Springs and Willow Springs. We are also the proud originators of the annual “Seeds of Greatness” awards dinner on April 17, held at the William Tell/Holiday Inn, for decades the singular opportunity for all of our communities to honor the best and the brightest in business and among students at our area schools. Award categories this year include: “Young Entrepreneur,” “Community Collaboration,” “Public Servant,” “Excellence in Business” and “Business Leader of the Year.” You still have time to be a sponsor, reserve a table for 10 or a dinner to join in the celebration, or place a message in the event program – contact our office (kristenh@wscci.org or 708-387-7550).

Our “Toast With The Most” Leadership Forums, inaugurated last year, bring government and business leaders whose decisions and actions affect all of us here. We continued this exceptional series on March 26 with the one and only Judy Baar Topinka, Illinois State Comptroller. Judy is a lifelong resident of Riverside and was welcomed warmly by dozens of old friends, neighbors and colleagues throughout her distinguished career. On April 22, we’ll host the first of our two US Congressmen, Mike Quigley of the 5th District (which now includes part of La Grange Park and La Grange). On May 13, our guest is Cook County Commissioner/McCook Mayor Jeff Tobolski. Congressman Dan Lipinski (3rd District) is on tap for July 15 and all of our Illinois State Senators and Representatives are also on the schedule, plus a couple of surprises later on.

Our West Suburban Economic Development Council reconvenes April 18 for discussion on several major topics, and we’re hosting a Transportation for Illinois meeting for municipal and state leaders April 22, to make sure our communities have a voice in roadway construction funds allocations. There’s a lot more going on with your Chamber. Check us out at http://www.wscci.org or call at 708-387-7550. Thank you, and good business!
