Proposed Glen Ellyn budget includes $1.6M shortfall
GLEN ELLYN – The proposed fiscal year 2013-14 budget for the village of Glen Ellyn includes about $46.6 million in revenues and $48.1 million in expenditures, giving the budget about a $1.6 million shortfall.
Revenues decreased by 1.2 percent from last year, and expenditures decreased by 10.3 percent. The decrease in expenditures is primarily due to the lack of certain capital projects, such as the Hawthorne Boulevard construction, that took place the previous year, finance director Kevin Wachtel said.
Operating funds comprise about 80 percent of the revenues and 76 percent of the expenditures, while the remaining amounts are part of capital funds. Although the proposed operating budget sees a $1 million surplus, the capital budget includes a $2.6 million shortfall.
The expected average annual cost to residents in the budget, including property taxes, water/sewer fees and garbage collection fees is $1,850, a 7.1 percent increase from last year.
The draft budget is available on the village’s website at www.glenellyn.org. Hard copies of the proposed budget can be found at the Civic Center, 535 Duane St., and the Glen Ellyn Public Library, 400 Duane St.
The budget covers from May 1, 2013, through April 30, 2014. In a straw poll taken by village trustees during a budget public hearing Monday, all trustees present voted in favor of the budget, although their votes were not binding.
The Village Board is expected to officially vote on the budget April 22. Another public hearing will be held prior to the vote.
