WESTERN SPRINGS — The Lyons Township baseball team isn’t dominating teams early in the season, but if they can take advantage of more opportunities, they just might start doing that.

A midweek loss to Lincoln-Way North and a lost series against Downers Grove North to open conference play isn’t going to impress anyone. However, coach George Ushela is confident the team is playing fine.

“We’re OK, we’ve left a lot of guys on base,” Ushela said. “We had the makings of big innings and just haven’t capitalized. We haven’t had tremendously timely hitting.”

Ushela noted the lack of timely hitting is as much about well-hit balls finding fielders as it is a lack of execution.

Lincoln-Way North’s Mike Miller held LT to one hit for the second year in a row in Wednesday’s 3-0 Phoenix win. Tom Prescott pitched five innings for LT.

The Lions fell for a second game in a row in a 6-3 loss at Downers Grove North, a loss that stings with Ushela.

“We gave up five unearned runs, we made four errors and they scored a lot of their runs after we got the first two guys out,” he said.

Needing a big win, LT turned to its ace, Michigan-recruit Keith Lehmann and he delivered in the second game. Lehmann pitched a complete game and struck out 10 batters in the 3-2 win.

The rubber game was played on Tuesday after wet field conditions pushed the game back from Monday and the Trojans won 7-2 to take the series.

LT next plays against Proviso East on Thursday before a three-game West Suburban Silver set with Proviso West. The Panthers have been 10-run ruled in all six Silver games so far.
