LOMBARD — Joey Farrell is Glenbard East’s top hitter, but don’t forget about Zach Greene.
With Farrell out of action Greene stepped up in the Rams’ 25-19, 25-20 win over Wheaton North Tuesday night in Lombard. Greene had nine kills and five blocks to lead the Rams in both categories.
“Zach stepped up,” said East coach Marci Maier. “He did what he needed to do. He obviously blocked extremely well.”
Greene and Farrell are the two returning starters from last year’s 32-7 squad. Farrell is signed to Penn State, but sat out with a knee injury. Farrell is expected back next week, but his absence allowed Greene to take the spotlight.
“It’s a one-two punch when you got Joe and Zach,” Maier said. “When they’re both in the lineup together that’s a luxury to have. With Joe out of there today Zach is doing what he normally does.”
Sterling Glover had eight kills for East (10-4, 2-1 DuPage Valley Conference). Joey Hamaker had three kills and a pair of blocks. Erik Fiebrandt added three kills.
Elvis Minyakow led the Falcons (10-4, 1-2) with six kills. Graham Clark had five.
“Up to today I’ve been real happy with the way things have gone,” said Wheaton North coach Bob St. Leger. “The kids have been working real hard. Obviously just hope it’s a little bit of a set back, it happens.”
