ELECTION 2013: Voter turnout low, on par with past local elections in DuPage

DUPAGE COUNTY – Voting stations opened at 6 a.m. Tuesday, and, so far, officials say voter turnout across DuPage County is on par with previous consolidated election numbers.

DuPage County Election Commission Executive Director Robert Saar estimated a 20.6 percent voter turnout as of 3 p.m., but expects totals to increase slightly after residents get off work.

"So far, these figures pretty much mirror the 2009 Consolidated Election," Saar said. "This is a very average turnout for a consolidated election when the townships are running."

Saar said that while it is possible voter turnout could spike as high as 23.5 percent, such lofty numbers are "very unlikely."

The executive director also said that a majority of voters are residents in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

All DuPage County Election voting stations will be open until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
