Dukes blast Panthers 46-2 in much-needed twinbill sweep
York gets back on track in conference play
HILLSIDE — After getting swept in their opening conference series, the York baseball team needed to get back on the winning track, and Proviso West may have been the perfect answer to that problem.
The cellar-dwelling Panthers proved no match for the Dukes in Saturday’s doubleheader. York won 19-1 and 27-1 to pick up its first West Suburban Silver wins.
Seth Dvorak and Zac Miller combined for a one-hitter in the five-inning Game 1 victory. Dvorak also had three hits at the plate.
Josh Paparone, Anthony Santos and Pete Doughty had two hits each. Doughty led York with four RBIs.
Louis Alcaraz and Alex Pedote combined to another five-inning one-hitter in Game 2. Santos was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Paparone, Jake Dvorak, Tyler Zunkel, Niall O’Brien, Ryan Saco and Mike Ross all had two hits each. Sixteen different York batters had hits.
The series finale, originally scheduled for Monday in Elmhurst, was pushed back three times due to weather.
In earlier non-conference action, the Dukes had struggled. On April 3, York lost to Wheaton North 9-0 with three errors resulting in eight runs, six unearned, in the first inning.
The response was a 17-1 win over Proviso East the next day. River Pitlock had four hits and six RBIs in that win.
Last Friday, Glenbard East edged past the Dukes 9-8. Paparone had a grand slam in the loss.
Following Saturday’s action the Dukes held a 5-5 record. They will play Glenbard West in the next West Suburban Silver series. The Hilltoppers have a 2-4 conference record after taking two out of three from Hinsdale Central over the weekend.
The series will open on Friday with a doubleheader under the lights at Benedictine University followed by the Monday finale in Glen Ellyn.
