What to watch: The Lemont boys tennis program has enjoyed a successful run in recent years, and early indications show that this spring won’t be any different.
After placing second at the Joliet West sectional a year ago, the Indians are off to a strong start this season, having compiled a dual meet record of 7-2 which includes South Suburban Conference wins over Bremen and TF South.
“With some great matches over the last few weeks, I am happy to see the team improving, competing and winning against some solid teams,” said Lemont coach Jon DeGuzman. “Our top players have shown their confidence on the court and are learning from both wins and losses to some great players.”
Sophomore Nick Urban is back after qualifying for state as a freshman and is currently 7-1 at No. 1 singles. Fellow sophomore Nathaniel Burner has a matching 7-1 mark at No. 2 singles.
Alex Vasic was a state qualifier in 2012 as part of a doubles team with Jonathan Pacheco and is now teaming with senior Jake Smagacz in the No. 1 spot. That duo is 5-0 on the young season.
“We look forward to the schedule ahead of us against the other teams of our conference,” the coach said, “and we hope to have a great showing at our two tournaments — the Joliet Invitational where we will see many of our opponents at the sectional tournament and also the 24-team tournament hosted by Lincoln-Way East.
“Playing against these schools and seeing some of these outstanding players will give our team the competition they need to improve their game as the regular season continues on.”
