Western Springs police issue alert after driver approaches kids, offers candy

WESTERN SPRINGS – Police in Western Springs issued at crime alert today at about 12:45 p.m. following two incidents in which the driver of a white SUV approached children on Saturday and offered them candy.

Police said both incidents involved the same vehicle, described as a late model white Chevy Suburban. The driver was described by witnesses as a white female in her 20s with dark hair and a "raspy" voice. A passenger in the car was described as a white male in his 20s, wearing a black baseball cap and white shirt.

In both incidents, police said the driver approached groups of boys between the ages of 9 and 14 years old, and asked if they wanted any candy that she had in the back of the vehicle. Witnesses said the male passenger appeared to be filming the kids with an iPhone-type device. The woman reportedly asked one of the groups of boys if they "wanted to film some video."

Both incidents occurred on Saturday, April 6 around 6:15 p.m. in the 4800 and 4900 blocks of Lawn Avenue in Western Springs.

Police said there were no actual or attempted physical contact made with any of the children, and the vehicle immediately left the area. Police searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspicious SUV. They are continuing to investigate.

In light of these incidents, police are reminding parents to talk with their children about strangers and safety.

Police are also asking residents to be on alert for suspicious vehicles or individuals, and to report any suspicious activity to Western Springs police by calling 911 or 708-246-8540.
