BERWYN — When Morton baseball coach Mike Casey said his team was ready to breakout after a loss to Riverside Brookfield on March 28, it may have sounded like optimistic coach speak.
At that time, the Mustangs were 0-2 and still fielded a young team. However, the Mustangs have since proved Casey right.
As expected, Morton swept Proviso East handily in the opening West Suburban Gold conference series and kept the momentum rolling with an impressive 2-1 win over Downers Grove North on Thursday. The Trojans were undefeated and coming off a sweep of defending West Suburban Silver champion York.
It was a bizarre game though. The Mustangs managed just one hit and committed five errors, but made two first-inning runs stand for the win.
Sergio Villalobos and Marco D’Angelo each had an RBI in the win. Villalobos also pitched three innings with Luis Rivera going four innings on the mound.
Morton then split a doubleheader at West Suburban Gold opponent Willowbrook on Saturday. Game 1 was a 10-0 loss in five innings to snap the Mustangs’ four-game winning streak, but Morton bounced back in Game 2.
Villalobos had four RBIs and the Mustangs scored nine runs in the final three innings of a 12-7 win. Nicholas Campanile managed four hits and two RBIs, and Elias McMahon pitched a complete game in the victory.
Morton won the rubber game 4-3 against Willowbrook to win the series and improve to 5-1 in the West Suburban Gold. The Mustangs will return to action Thursday against Proviso West before returning to conference action with a three-game series against Downers Grove South.
Morton will host Saturday’s doubleheader in the battle of the Mustangs before heading to Downers Grove South on Monday.
