Veteran Rams baseball squad endures rough start

Glenbard East hopes to rebound in conference opener on Monday

LOMBARD — The weather has slowed the start of the baseball season for most teams in the area, but Glenbard East baseball has been busy playing 11 games in the past 13 days.

The Rams are a disappointing 3-8 after spending spring break in Indiana and Kentucky.

On March 27, Downers Grove North beat East 4-0 and that started a five-game losing streak. The Rams lost both games in Evansville, Ind. the next day, falling to Castle 4-0 and Evansville Mater Dei 2-1.

Once the Rams arrived in Louisville, they lost to Pleasant Prairie Ridge 9-0 last Friday. On Saturday, Christian Academy of Louisville beat East 11-1 in the first game before the Rams ended the skid with a 13-1 victory in Game 2.

St. Louis University-bound Nick Vichio limited Christian Academy to one run over six innings and had three strikeouts in the win. Vichio and Yoanny Gonzalez each had three hits.

The results, albeit closer, haven't been much better since the Rams returned to the Chicago area. A 5-4 loss to Lake Park on Monday and a 4-3 loss at Huntley on Tuesday was not what the Rams had in mind.

On Wednesday, the Rams beat their first opponent from the area with a 6-1 win over Prospect. Troy Huber pitched a complete game and struck out eight Knights. Joe Kotch had two hits and a walk.

The 3-8 start is not what East had envisioned with a senior-heavy and experienced group back from a 22-win squad last spring. However, with conference play right around the corner, the Rams have an opportunity to right the ship.

York comes to Lombard at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the final non-conference game before the Rams open DuPage Valley Conference play against Naperville Central. The three-game set is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
